Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Rancho Santa Fe, CA

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) means resting in a pressurized chamber while your lungs take in extra oxygen. Here it is always one part of a wider recovery plan.

Overview

Maybe you are coming back from an injury, training hard, or dealing with tiredness that will not lift. You have heard that time in a hyperbaric chamber helps, and you want to know what is real.

HBOT is one of the recovery options at our wellness center in Rancho Santa Fe. We explain what it can and cannot do, then decide with you whether it belongs in your plan.

What it is

What is Hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is time spent resting inside a pressurized chamber. The higher pressure lets your lungs take in more oxygen than they do at normal air pressure, and your blood carries it through the body. At True Performance, sessions last about 60 minutes in a one-person hard-shell chamber, such as our Fortius F420.

How it works

  1. We review your health history and safety questions first.

  2. You lie back in the chamber as the pressure rises slowly.

  3. You rest and breathe normally, then the pressure comes back down.

What it helps with

  • Recovery support alongside rehab after an injury
  • Recovery between hard training blocks
  • Fatigue that is part of a wider care plan

When it is not the right tool

  • Emergencies such as carbon monoxide poisoning or diving illness: go to a hospital
  • Replacing care your physician has prescribed
  • Anyone who cannot rest in a closed chamber for an hour

The re-check

We check how you feel and function as sessions go on. If HBOT is not adding anything to your plan, we stop it.

What does the added pressure do?

Inside the chamber, the air pressure is raised above normal. That lets your lungs take in more oxygen, and your blood carries it to your tissues while you rest. Your ears may feel full as the pressure changes, much like on a plane.

Conditions

Goals Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can support

HBOT is never the whole plan here. These are the concerns it most often comes up with, always next to other care.

Recovery after an injury

Some patients ask about HBOT while they rebuild movement and strength after an injury. It can be scheduled next to that work, never in place of it.

Hard training and competition

Athletes sometimes book sessions around practices and events. We plan them so they fit around your training and rehab.

Why here

Why Hyperbaric oxygen therapy at True Performance

  • We know the equipment closely

Dr. Jeff McWhorter, D.C., designs hyperbaric chambers, so we can walk you through each step before your first session. Want one at home? See hyperbaric chambers for sale.

  • Planned with the rest of your care

Sessions are timed around your rehab, training and work, so HBOT supports your plan instead of replacing it.

  • Clear about what HBOT is not

You hear which uses are accepted and which are not before you spend time or money.

Is it for you

Is Hyperbaric oxygen therapy right for you?

A good fit if

  • You are already working on recovery with a clear plan
  • You can lie still in a closed chamber for about an hour
  • You want to try HBOT knowing its limits

We check first if

  • You have a lung condition or have had a collapsed lung
  • You recently injured your ear or had ear surgery
  • You have a cold or a fever
  • You are pregnant

If anything on the second list applies, we wait or check with your physician before your first session.

Our screening questions follow the cautions in Cleveland Clinic's guide to hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Your visits

What to expect

  1. A 15-minute intro call

A complimentary call about your goals and whether HBOT is worth discussing.

  2. Your comprehensive exam

About 90 minutes, plus data and history gathering. We go through your health history and safety questions before any session.

  3. Getting ready

You change into cotton clothing and leave your phone, watch and other electronics outside. Oxygen raises fire risk, so the chamber rules are strict.

  4. Your session

You lie back and breathe normally for about 60 minutes while the pressure rises and falls slowly.

  5. Review and adjust

We check how you feel and function, then keep, change or stop HBOT in your plan.

The chamber rules follow the FDA letter on safe use of hyperbaric chambers.

Cost

Cost and insurance

Cost depends on how many sessions your plan includes and what else is in it. We explain it before you begin.

What your cost depends on

  1. The number of HBOT sessions in your plan
  2. How often sessions are scheduled
  3. Whether HBOT is paired with other services
  4. Whether you need a first exam or are already a patient

Ask us about cost and payment options on your intro call.

Questions

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy questions

Ask us: (858) 285-0073

What is the downside of hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

The most common problem is ear or sinus pressure as the chamber pressure changes. Some people feel closed in, and oxygen raises fire risk, which is why electronics stay outside. We review your history first to lower these risks.

Is HBOT used for concussion, brain injury or stroke?

These are not on the accepted list of HBOT uses. If you are in rehab with us, you can ask how HBOT might sit alongside your program, and we coordinate with your physician. It never replaces your rehab or medical care.

Can I bring my phone into the hyperbaric chamber?

No. Phones, watches and other electrical or static-producing items stay outside, because they raise fire risk in an oxygen-rich chamber. We give you the full list before your first session.

How quickly does hyperbaric oxygen work?

There is no set timeline, and results vary from person to person. We review how you feel and function as sessions go on, and we stop if HBOT is not helping.

Does insurance cover hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

We explain cost and payment options on your intro call, before you book any sessions. Questions about your own coverage are best asked of your insurer.
