Shoulders and hips
Shoulders and hips move in many directions, so training, long hours sitting and old injuries can leave them stiff. We check range and comfort, then decide how to care for a stiff or painful shoulder or a tight hip.
A shoulder that will not reach, a stiff ankle or a sore wrist changes how you move all day. Extremity adjustments bring chiropractic care to the joints of your arms and legs.
Overview
Most people link chiropractic care with the neck and back. Your shoulders, knees, wrists and ankles are joints too, and each one shapes how you walk, lift, grip and play.
A sore ankle can change your stride. A stiff shoulder can change your swing, and other joints start doing extra work. Extremity adjustment is part of the full range of chiropractic services we offer.

What it is
An extremity adjustment is a controlled chiropractic technique applied to a joint outside the spine, such as a shoulder, knee, wrist or ankle. It is done by hand or with a handheld instrument. The aim is to help a stiff or restricted joint move more freely so everyday and athletic tasks feel easier.

We test the painful joint's range, comfort and nearby joints.
The contact, direction and pressure are set for that joint.
We re-test the movement that was hard before.
The re-check
If the joint's motion and comfort are not improving, we change the approach or refer you for imaging or another opinion.
Joints also tell your nervous system where your body is. When one stops moving comfortably, you shift your weight or change your stride. Freeing that joint, then adding movement work, can reduce those workarounds.
Manipulation is most often done on the spine, but other joints can be adjusted the same way, as the NCCIH overview of chiropractic care notes.
Conditions
We look at the painful joint and at how it works with the rest of your body, including your spine.
Shoulders and hips move in many directions, so training, long hours sitting and old injuries can leave them stiff. We check range and comfort, then decide how to care for a stiff or painful shoulder or a tight hip.
Running, lifting and racquet sports put repeated force through the knees and elbows. An adjustment may help when knee pain from running or stairs comes with restricted motion.
Typing, tools, old sprains and repeated impact stiffen the smaller joints. See how we approach joint stiffness and pain in the arms and legs.
Why here
Walking, lifting a child, typing, running or swinging a golf club: we begin with the activity that has become hard, then find the joints involved. Every adjustment has a clear purpose.
We examine the painful joint along with the joints above and below it and your spinal movement. A sore knee can start at the hip or the foot.
Extremity and spinal adjustments often fit in the same plan when both areas are involved.
Athletes, parents and people with physical jobs all bring different demands, and the plan follows yours.
Other options
Stretching, strengthening, rest and physical therapy help many sore joints. A joint that locks, gives way or swells may need imaging or an orthopedic opinion first. We use extremity adjustments when your exam shows a restricted joint is part of the problem.
Is it for you
If the second list applies, we review your records and check with your physician or surgeon first.
Your visits
A complimentary call about the joint, the task it limits and your goals.
About 90 minutes, plus data and history gathering. We test range of motion, strength, balance and how nearby joints move.
You may feel brief pressure or a quick, controlled movement, and sometimes hear a pop. We change the position or pressure if the area is tender.
We re-test the movement that was hard and suggest mobility work to keep the gain.
Cost
Cost depends on your exam findings and how many visits your plan needs. We explain it before you commit.

Visit
Visits take place at our Rancho Santa Fe office: 18029 Calle Ambiente, Suite 507, in Cielo Village. The office sits near Lake Hodges, a convenient stop for golfers, riders and runners across North County San Diego.
The first step
It usually feels like brief pressure or a quick, controlled movement. If the area is tender, we change the position or use less pressure.
We explain cost and payment options on your intro call, before you book an exam. The total depends on how many visits your plan needs.
Yes. When your exam shows both areas are involved, we include both in one plan and decide which joints to adjust at each visit.
Balance depends partly on how weight moves through your feet, ankles, knees and hips. When one joint is stiff, you compensate, and freeing it plus balance exercises can reduce that.
There is no standard schedule. It depends on the joint, how long it has bothered you and how it responds, and we re-check before adding visits.
