In depth
Why does he work with young athletes?
Young athletes hold a special place in his work. Having experienced six severe head traumas himself, Dr. McWhorter understands how frustrating it is for a student athlete to sit on the sidelines, and how worrying it is for parents who want to know their child is truly ready.
He partners with families, coaches, and athletic trainers on baseline concussion testing, individualized rehabilitation, and structured, step-by-step return-to-play programs designed to help young athletes get back to their sport safely and with confidence.
Who decides when a young athlete can play again?
California law (Ed Code 49475) requires school athletes with a concussion to get written clearance from a licensed health care provider and complete a graduated return-to-play protocol of at least 7 days under supervision. Dr. McWhorter works as part of the return-to-play team.
What did he do before True Performance?
Before founding True Performance in Rancho Santa Fe, Dr. McWhorter served as a chiropractic consultant to the Denver Broncos, working with elite athletes to improve recovery and performance.
He designed True Performance to bring neurological rehabilitation, chiropractic care, wellness and performance services together in one setting. You can meet the pro athletes he has worked with, named with their consent.
How does he plan your care?
Every plan starts with a detailed evaluation of balance, vision, coordination, reaction time and thinking speed, plus your history and goals. He re-tests as care goes on and changes the plan when your results change.
For GyroStim, he sets each protocol after a detailed evaluation, exam and review of the injury and history. For medical questions and medication, he works in coordination with your physician and medical team.
What is his training?
He holds a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri. His practice centers on functional neurology, concussion rehabilitation and performance, and he works alongside the rest of the care team at the clinic.
Where else might you have seen him?
He is a past speaker at the Autism Health Summit. In March 2026, LocallyWell San Diego published a feature on his work.
“No game is important enough to gamble with a teenager’s brain.”
